Greater Long Island Wheelchair Athletic Club

The Long Island Express Wheelchair Basketball team was formed in 1984 to provide competitive athletics for physically challenged athletes in the Long Island area.  The "LIE" or "Express," was admitted in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and compete in the Eastern Wheelchair Basketball Conference.  The Eastern Conference is one of 25 Conference's in the NWBA.  There are over two hundred wheelchair basketball teams in the United States.

Since the formation of the team, our goals have become varied and far-reaching.  Besides wheelchair basketball, our member adult and youth team's participate in other sports for the disabled.  They include road racing, tennis, skiing and swimming.  In addition to our involvement with wheelchair sports, our team participates in "Awareness Days" in many schools in the Long Island area.

Since its inception, the Express have captured several Conference Championships (most recently 2005) and have participated in NWBA playoffs eleven times.  While we play out home games in the Long Island area, the Express have traveled & played games from Boston to Virginia to Rockford, IL.  We continue to strive for success through competition and to educate the public to the "Ability, not the disability" of our members.
